Build an MCP Server for Your Own Data
A Model Context Protocol server that exposes your own data — a SQLite database, a folder of notes, a small API — as tools that Claude Desktop and Claude Code can call directly. Your first real bridge between an LLM and a live system.
Project overview
MCP is now the shared tool layer across every major agent framework, so a server you built proves you can wire an AI to real systems in a way that ports anywhere. It is small enough to finish in a weekend and specific enough that interviewers ask to see it run.
Real-world use case
A small team wants Claude to answer questions about their internal inventory spreadsheet and log new items, without anyone pasting data into a chat window.
Tools and technologies
- Python
- MCP Python SDK
- FastMCP
- SQLite
- Claude Desktop / Claude Code
Skills you can demonstrate
Tool Design, MCP Protocol, JSON Schemas, Python Packaging, LLM Integration
Build roadmap
- Pick a small data source
Create a SQLite database with one or two tables — inventory, contacts, tasks. Seed it with 20–30 rows so tool calls return something interesting. - Scaffold the server with FastMCP
Install the MCP Python SDK, create a server, and register one read-only tool. Run it over stdio and confirm it starts without errors. - Register it in Claude Desktop
Add the server to the Claude Desktop config file, restart, and confirm the tool appears. Ask a question that forces Claude to call it. - Add write and detail tools
Add an add-item tool and a get-by-id tool. Write the descriptions for the model, not for humans — say exactly when each tool should and should not be used. - Handle errors like a product
Return clear error messages for missing ids and bad input. Watch how Claude recovers when a call fails — that behavior depends entirely on your error text. - Document and package it
Write a README with install steps and the config snippet, add a pyproject file, and record a short demo. This is what you link in applications.
Ways to extend the project
Add a second transport (Streamable HTTP) with OAuth so the same server works remotely from claude.ai, not just locally over stdio.
How to showcase your work
- GitHub: The server package, a README with the Claude Desktop config snippet, and a short GIF of Claude calling each tool.
- LinkedIn: Record a 45-second clip: ask Claude a question it cannot answer alone, watch it call your tool, and get the right answer back.
- Resume: Lead with "MCP server development", "LLM tool integration", and "schema design for AI tool calling".
