Cloud-Native Serverless Monitoring & Alerting System

A serverless AWS solution that tracks uptime and performance of remote IT assets, triggering Slack alerts on failure.

Project overview

Modern IT support requires managing distributed, cloud-first environments. This project demonstrates your ability to build scalable, cost-effective monitoring tools that ensure high availability — a critical requirement for any modern IT Infrastructure role.

Real-world use case

A Managed Service Provider uses this tool to monitor 50+ client websites and internal servers without the overhead of maintaining a dedicated monitoring server.

Build roadmap

  1. Create an AWS free-tier account
Sign up for AWS and explore the Lambda, CloudWatch, and SNS dashboards. Install the AWS CLI locally.
  2. Write the health-check Lambda
Create a Python Lambda function that takes a list of URLs, pings each one, and records the response code + latency.
  3. Schedule it with CloudWatch Events
Set up a trigger that runs your Lambda every 5 minutes. Start with 3–5 URLs in your watchlist.
  4. Connect a Slack webhook
Create an incoming webhook in a test Slack channel. Update your Lambda to POST alerts to it when a URL returns non-200.
  5. Add CloudWatch metrics + alarms
Publish custom metrics (response_time, up_down). Create an alarm that triggers if latency exceeds a threshold.
  6. Deploy with Infrastructure-as-Code
Recreate the whole stack in Terraform or CloudFormation so anyone can spin it up with one command. This is the resume gold.

Ways to extend the project

Add an AI-driven "Anomaly Detection" layer using AWS Lookout for Metrics or a simple Python ML library to alert on unusual traffic patterns before a system actually fails.
