Automated User Lifecycle Management (Entra ID)

A no-code automated onboarding workflow that creates accounts, assigns licenses, and emails managers — all from a form.

Project overview

Manual onboarding is prone to error and slow. Showing you can automate the "User Lifecycle" demonstrates high-level administrative skills that go beyond basic password resets, making you a candidate for Tier 2 roles.

Real-world use case

Build roadmap

  1. Get a Microsoft 365 dev tenant
Sign up for the free developer sandbox, which includes Entra ID, Power Automate, and sample users. Create a test department structure and two manager accounts.
  2. Build the intake form
A Microsoft Form with first name, last name, department, manager email, and start date. Use a dropdown for department so the flow never has to guess spelling.
  3. Create the Power Automate flow
Trigger on form submit, then create the user in Entra ID with the built-in connector. Generate the username from a rule and handle the duplicate-name case.
  4. Add dynamic group assignment
Branch on department to add the user to the right security and Teams groups. Test every branch with a real submission, not just the first one.
  5. Assign licenses
Use the assign-license action and choose the SKU by role. Add a condition that fails loudly when no licenses remain instead of silently creating an unlicensed user.
  6. Notify the manager
Email the manager a welcome note with the username and first-day steps, and send the temporary password through a separate channel. Document why you split them.

Ways to extend the project

Use an AI to automatically generate compliance reports for user access reviews based on role and department.
