ServiceNow ITSM Build: Catalog, Workflows, and Reporting
A configured ServiceNow instance with a service catalog, flow-designer approval workflows, a CMDB populated with real relationships, and dashboards that report on service health.
Project overview
ServiceNow runs the service desk at a large share of enterprises, and administrators are scarce enough that the platform skill alone moves you up a tier in pay. A free personal developer instance means you can build the exact thing employers screen for without a corporate license.
Real-world use case
An enterprise consolidating IT requests onto one platform needs a catalog with multi-stage approvals, an accurate CMDB, and reporting leadership will actually read.

Build roadmap
- Claim a developer instance
ServiceNow gives away free personal developer instances. Request one and complete the initial setup — it is a full platform, not a limited trial. - Learn the data model
Before building anything, understand how task, incident, request, and CMDB tables relate. Everything you build later depends on getting this right. - Build the service catalog
Create 4–5 catalog items with variables, variable sets, and sensible UI policies. Make them look like things a real employee would order. - Design the approval workflows
Use Flow Designer to build multi-stage approvals with conditional branching. Use the AI prompt below for the cost-threshold logic. - Populate the CMDB
Load configuration items and, more importantly, map the relationships between them. Then show impact analysis for an outage on one server. - Build the reporting layer
Create dashboards for ticket volume, SLA attainment, and catalog usage. Present it as though to an IT director — the reporting is what makes this an advanced project.
Ways to extend the project
Add a Virtual Agent conversation that resolves a common request end to end — password reset or software request — without ever creating a ticket a human has to touch.
How to showcase your work
- GitHub: An update set export plus documentation — catalog item design, flow diagrams, CMDB schema, and dashboard screenshots.
- LinkedIn: Record the full journey of one request: submitted in the portal, routed for approval, fulfilled, and reflected on the dashboard.
- Resume: Focus on "ServiceNow administration", "Flow Designer workflow development", and "CMDB management".
